This is our review of KIKI Shiretoko Natural Resort (Maps), visited in June 2026.
When traveling to Shiretoko, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, you want a hotel stay that becomes part of the journey itself. On this visit, I stayed at KIKI Shiretoko Natural Resort (KIKI(キキ)知床ナチュラルリゾート), located on a hill in the Utoro Onsen area. It is a casual yet stylish natural resort where guests can unwind amid the warmth of wood, with Shiretoko’s dramatic mountains and the Sea of Okhotsk close at hand.
I chose a room-only plan and stayed in a standard room. For a trip centered on sightseeing, this flexible option was ideal: after a full day exploring Shiretoko, I could return to the hotel and relax at the hot spring baths and lounge at my own pace.
A Warm, Wood-Filled Retreat in Shiretoko
The moment I entered the lobby, I was struck by the soft interior design, which makes generous use of natural wood, and by the spaces inspired by the surrounding landscape. Rather than pursuing overt luxury, the hotel creates an atmosphere that blends naturally with Shiretoko’s forests and sea—somewhere guests can truly let their shoulders drop. It is well suited to family trips, sauna-focused getaways, couples, and anyone looking to step away from daily life and recharge.
One of KIKI Shiretoko Natural Resort’s greatest appeals is that the time spent inside the hotel feels like part of the experience. The lounge and dinner service offer an all-inclusive-style selection of drinks and light snacks, including beer, wine, and sake. Details may vary depending on the season and booking plan, but being able to relax without constantly wondering what to drink or where to find a snack is one of the pleasures of a resort stay.
A Spacious Feel in a Standard Room
The room I stayed in was a standard type. The Natural Twin room features a clean, modern design with warm wood tones. It felt more spacious in person than it appeared in photographs, with enough room to open suitcases comfortably without making the space feel crowded. While hotel rooms can sometimes become little more than a place to sleep while traveling, this was a room where I found myself lingering—sitting by the window, admiring the sea, and resting after a bath.
Beyond the window stretched the clear blue expanse of the Sea of Okhotsk. On a fine day, the color of the water changes subtly with the light. From the upper floors in particular, guests can enjoy a remarkable sunset as the sun slowly sinks beyond the horizon. Watching the sea turn shades of red and gold is the kind of moment that makes you truly feel you have arrived in Shiretoko.
For families traveling with children, the more spacious Japanese-Western rooms and Natural Japanese-style rooms are also appealing choices. The Japanese-Western rooms include a daybed and have separate bathroom and toilet facilities, making mornings easier for families getting ready together. The Natural Japanese-style rooms offer 12 tatami mats of open space, creating a safe environment for crawling babies. Families can sleep side by side on futons, avoiding concerns about children falling out of beds.
A Spa Destination for Sauna Lovers
KIKI Shiretoko Natural Resort stands out among Shiretoko hotels for the quality and variety of its sauna facilities. In addition to hot spring baths, the hotel offers four distinctive saunas—enough to make it a destination in its own right for sauna enthusiasts.
The 85°C Kurouna is a completely dark sauna designed to block visual distractions and sharpen awareness of heat, breathing, and physical sensation. The outdoor Igloo Sauna, an Estonia-made dome-shaped sauna, is warmed by a wood-burning stove and offers a gentler heat of around 70–80°C. There is also the 85°C Neuuna, designed for guests to lie down and experience heat across the entire body, and the 70°C Whisking Sauna, filled with the soothing fragrance of birch branches, known as vihta. With several options available, guests can choose according to their mood and physical condition.
The “Wakka Button” in the cold bath is another memorable feature. Press it, and a waterfall of cold water pours down from above while the refreshing scent of Japanese mint spreads through the air. It is a playful yet effective way to cool down quickly after the sauna. The changing area is also well equipped with premium hair dryers such as Dyson and Repronizer models, making the post-sauna routine as pleasant as the sauna itself.
Entertainment for Every Age
The hotel’s theater lounge features a roughly 250-inch screen showing videos of Shiretoko’s natural scenery. Swaying in a hammock while watching images of forests and the sea, it is easy to drift into a peaceful nap. At this hotel, doing nothing at all can become one of the most luxurious parts of the trip.
At the “Future Post Office,” guests can write a letter to themselves to be delivered one year later. It is a lovely way to preserve memories of the landscapes you saw, your family’s expressions, or the season you hope to visit next. The letter becomes a small time capsule that extends the feeling of the trip long after returning home.
Families will appreciate the “Asobi no Mori” play area, which includes a ball pit and cyber wheel, as well as an indoor stamp rally and children’s yukata available in three sizes for ages three and above. Even while adults enjoy the lounge or hot spring baths, children can find their own adventures throughout the hotel. At the “Under the Yew Tree” shop, visitors can browse Shiretoko folk crafts, popular long-tailed tit goods, and pottery demonstrations—making souvenir shopping part of the fun.
The staff’s genuine affection for Shiretoko is also evident. They are happy to offer sightseeing advice about attractions such as Kamuiwakka Hot Falls and provide thoughtful assistance, including towel rentals when needed.
Convenient as a base for exploring Shiretoko yet rewarding enough to make time at the hotel a highlight in itself, KIKI Shiretoko Natural Resort is a place worth remembering. A room-only plan offers flexibility for an independent itinerary, while meal-inclusive plans allow guests to savor the region’s flavors. With its sunset views, welcoming atmosphere, excellent saunas, and evolving buffet, it is a Shiretoko resort hotel that makes you want to return in another season.
