This is our review of “HOTEL LEPO CHAHAL” (Maps), visited in April 2026.

In Finnish, “Lepo” means “rest,” a fitting name for HOTEL LEPO CHAHAL—a property that embodies the art of quiet rejuvenation. The hotel harmoniously fuses the minimal elegance of Nordic design with the gentle sensibility and hospitality of Matsuyama, Ehime. The neutral tones, tactile materials, and abundance of natural light evoke a serene northern calm, while local artistry and craftsmanship keep the atmosphere grounded in Ehime. Notably, works by textile artist Fujio Ishimoto give the interiors a delicate rhythm and texture, bridging the sensibilities of Finnish simplicity and Japanese refinement.
Arrival and Location
For travelers arriving at Matsuyama Airport, the journey to the hotel is seamless: a swift limousine bus or taxi ride (about 25 minutes) leads directly to Matsuyama Mitsukoshi, the landmark department store in the city center where the hotel occupies the upper floors. The location is exceptionally convenient—guests have immediate access to premium shopping, dining, and the Okaido tram stop, connecting to Dogo Onsen and JR Matsuyama Station. The integration within Mitsukoshi offers a sense of security and comfort, especially for first-time visitors.

Rooms and Spatial Design
The Twin Room, spanning an impressive 60 square meters, is thoughtfully zoned into distinct living and sleeping areas. The open-concept design allows guests to flow comfortably between spaces without compromising privacy. The bedding, crafted with premium linens and a supportive mattress, promises deep rest and gentle recovery after a day of travel or exploration.

The bathroom reflects the same restrained elegance found throughout the property—minimalist yet indulgent. Finished in pale stone and warm wood, the space feels serene and spacious, with soft lighting that evokes a Nordic spa. A deep soaking tub sits beside a rain shower area, offering both relaxation and rejuvenation. Everything, from the layout to the scent of the toiletries, is designed to create a calm, restorative moment before or after the Finnish sauna experience.

A highlight is the private Finnish sauna, constructed from pale wood that releases a subtle aroma when heated—an immersive relaxation experience rarely found in city hotels of this scale.

Guests looking to elevate their private Finnish sauna experience can request a Kugel, a specialized Eisaufguss-Kugel ice infuser designed for gentle scent distribution. This elegant tool releases ice and aroma gradually, ensuring a perfectly balanced sauna climate that feels both refreshing and enveloping. The consistent infusion creates a soft rise in temperature and fragrance, making each session deeply calming and sensorial.

Amenities and In-Room Details
HOTEL LEPO CHAHAL’s commitment to quality is evident in its selection of amenities. Imabari towels—renowned for their softness and absorbency—reflect local Ehime craftsmanship. Skincare products are sourced from Japanese boutique natural brands – ALL THE SPA, emphasizing texture and purity. Each room is equipped with a Balmuda electric kettle for brewing tea or coffee with precision, while the presence of a Bang & Olufsen Bluetooth speaker adds an understated touch of luxury and acoustic warmth, bringing Nordic modernity to the intimate room setting.

Breakfast at RESTAURANT AINO

Best Suited Guests
HOTEL LEPO CHAHAL appeals most to design-conscious couples, leisure travelers, and guests seeking a slow, restorative stay in an urban setting. The generous room size is a luxury for pairs or small groups, but solo travelers may find the scale—especially in the 60 m² twin rooms—a touch excessive both spatially.
Common Areas
Guests can unwind in a comfortable lounge and reading area, designed with soft lighting and natural materials, reflecting the same aesthetic restraint as the guest rooms. There is also a small fitness corner and direct indoor access to Mitsukoshi’s shops and cafes—a considerable convenience in inclement weather.

HOTEL LEPO CHAHAL stands as a refined sanctuary that merges Finnish calm with Matsuyama’s artistry and warmth. Its thoughtful design, exceptional comfort, and sense of quiet sophistication make it one of the city’s most distinctive boutique stays.
