This is our review of Rakyo Ikegami (Maps), visited in February 2026 and March 2026 (the second time).
If you’re searching for the best fresh seafood in Tokyo, there’s a place locals whisper about—Rakyo Ikegami, a hidden restaurant near Ikegami Station where you can taste the ocean’s bounty straight from the coast of Minamiboso. As someone who’s dined across Japan for years, I can honestly say this was one of the most memorable seafood lunches I’ve had in the city.

A True Fisherman’s Restaurant in Tokyo
Rakyo Ikegami isn’t your typical Tokyo seafood spot—it’s a set-net local fish specialty restaurant run by a real fisherman-chef. Every morning, the owner himself heads out to the fixed nets off Tateyama in Minamiboso and personally selects the day’s catch. These fish are then sent directly to the restaurant, ensuring absolute freshness that’s impossible to find at a regular market.

Originally based in Minami-Oi, Shinagawa, Rakyo moved to a quiet area near Ikegami Honmonji Temple, bringing its spirit of authenticity to a new neighborhood. The idea was simple yet powerful: deliver true fisherman’s meals to everyday diners. Ever since its appearance on Ariyoshi’s Honest Walk, Rakyo has become a nationwide favorite.
Casual Atmosphere, Serious Flavor

Just a 3-minute walk from Ikegami Station, Rakyo looks more like a nostalgic fish shop than a restaurant. The handwritten menu slips flutter outside, and it’s common to see a line forming early in the day. Ordering is refreshingly personal—you write down your name, hand a menu tag to the staff, and wait for your turn. Drinks are self-serve, and the friendly, casual vibe makes it great for families too.
The space is cozy and buzzing with conversation. Whether you’re a local foodie or a visitor exploring Tokyo’s authentic food culture, Rakyo’s energy instantly reels you in.
Highlight Dish: The Chef’s Premium Sashimi Platter

The standout item on my visit was the Chef’s Choice Premium Sashimi Platter (¥2,900)—a masterpiece of color and freshness. Five varieties of local fish were arranged like art on a plate: gleaming red todai-tsubu shellfish, vibrant orange Fuji salmon, and translucent white hiramasa and inada.
The aroma carried the fresh scent of sea breeze, and each bite was a burst of natural sweetness and umami. The chewy shellfish, melt-in-your-mouth salmon, and delicately sweet white fish created a perfect harmony that was unforgettable. Served with simmered cod roe and miso soup, it was a meal that captured the very essence of Japan’s coastal cuisine.
The Variety Local Fish Marinated Bowl: A Must-Try

Next, I tried the Variety Local Fish Marinated Bowl (¥1,900)—a colorful rice bowl featuring over eight kinds of lightly marinated fish. Each slice of sashimi glistened like jewels in a mosaic, with the nutty aroma of sesame and rich soy marinade filling the air.
Every bite offered something different: soft and silky here, firm and crunchy there. Combined with a hint of spiciness, the flavors danced together beautifully.
Why Rakyo Ikegami Is Worth the Trip

Rakyo Ikegami delivers where many seafood restaurants fall short—freshness, flavor, and authenticity. The fish here isn’t just served fresh; it’s served with a story. You can taste the dedication of a fisherman who brings the best of the sea straight to your table.

If you’re planning a food trip in Tokyo, make Rakyo Ikegami a priority stop. It’s the perfect place to end a peaceful walk around Ikegami Honmonji Temple and experience the pure joy of seasonal Japanese seafood.
We visited Rakyo Ikegami again in March 2026 to try different dishes.
Narumi Atsukan 鳴海熱燗 (Hot Sake)
Enjoy Narumi Junmai Ginjo from Minami Boso served warm. Its golden hue gleams through the rising steam, releasing a gentle, fruity aroma reminiscent of sweet sake. Smooth on the palate, the delicate sweetness of rice spreads across the tongue, while a faint heat perfectly complements local fish dishes. Its liquid silkiness leaves a clean finish.

Grilled Isaki with Salt
Seasonal Isaki (grunt fish) (イサキ塩焼き) is served simply grilled with salt. The skin crisps to a golden brown that whets the appetite, while lemon’s citrus note blends beautifully with the ocean fragrance of the fish. The flesh is plump and tender, with salt enhancing its natural sweetness and refined white-meat flavor. It flakes delicately and even the bones turn aromatic.

Fried Horse Mackerel
Crispy fried horse mackerel (アジフライ) shines golden with the aroma of freshly fried oil. A squeeze of lemon releases a refreshing scent like sea breeze. One bite reveals a crunchy exterior and moist interior—the mackerel’s rich flavor and fluffy texture burst forth like sweet shrimp. Finished with creamy tartar sauce.

Mini Tairyo Don ミニ大漁丼 (Seafood Bowl)
This mini seafood bowl dazzles with colorful tuna, salmon, and white fish. The sweet scent of fresh seafood mixes with soy sauce to boost your appetite. Each bite is a harmony of vinegared rice soaked with fish essence and luscious toppings rich in sweetness and fat. Textures range from bouncy to melt-in-your-mouth.

Scallops in Butter Sauce ホタテバター
Large, plump scallops are grilled in rich butter, creating a golden, aromatic sauce and a truly luxurious sight. The nutty aroma of browned butter merges with the scallops’ sweet sea-scent, tantalizing the nose. The taste is creamy and full-bodied, with tender, springy bites and melt-in-your-mouth fat that you can’t get enough of.

Fish Head Miso Soup あら汁
This clear golden fish miso soup is filled with generous chunks of fish lightly simmered. The savory fragrance of fish broth and kelp fills the room. Gentle saltiness blends with natural fish sweetness for a refined, comforting flavor. Tender pieces of fish mix with slightly gelatinous broth for a satisfying texture.

Grilled Baby Firefly Squid 炙り千ホタルイカ
Tiny firefly squid are expertly seared with a torch, their red-black char marks enhancing flavor and visual appeal. The squid’s sweet roasted aroma pairs perfectly with the scent of the sea. Crispy outside, tender inside, with a balance of sweetness and salt from the sauce—it’s irresistibly rich in umami. Addictive chewy texture makes this a standout.
