“Hotel Tateyama” Review: Stay at Japan’s Highest Hotel (2,450m)

This is our review of Hotel Tateyama (Maps), visited in May 2026.

Staying at Hotel Tateyama ホテル立山, the highest hotel in Japan at 2,450 meters above sea level, is a one-of-a-kind experience along the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. Located directly at Murodo Terminal, this iconic mountain resort offers unmatched convenience, breathtaking scenery, and exclusive experiences only available to overnight guests. During my visit, I stayed in a 4th-floor Western-style Room A (Triple, with bath and toilet) with a French dinner and breakfast buffet included.

Location and Access: The Ultimate Murodo Stay

Hotel Tateyama boasts an unbeatable location in Murodo, the highest point of the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. At 2,450 meters, it is officially the highest-altitude hotel in Japan, making it a bucket-list destination for travelers.

What sets this Murodo hotel apart is its direct connection to Murodo Terminal. It is the only accommodation in the area with this level of access, allowing guests to check in and stepping outside—even in rain, fog, or strong winds. This makes it the most convenient hotel for exploring the Alpine Route.

Another major highlight is the exclusive access to “Murodo’s silence.” After the last trolley bus departs, the crowds disappear, and only hotel guests remain. You can enjoy serene sunsets over the Tateyama mountain range, peaceful walks around Mikurigaike Pond, and magical sunrise views without crowds—an experience impossible on a day trip.

Rooms: Functional Comfort with Natural Luxury

The 4th-floor Western-style Room A (Triple) is compact, measuring around 18–26 square meters, similar to a functional business hotel. However, it is clean, comfortable, and well-maintained.

Room categories at Hotel Tateyama include:

  • Type A: With bath and toilet (most convenient).
  • Type B: With toilet and better views.
  • Type C: With toilet only.

One standout feature is the tap water. Guests can drink directly from the faucet, which supplies “Tateyama Tamadono Spring Water,” recognized among Japan’s top 100 natural waters. Its pure, smooth taste adds a unique luxury element to your stay.

Dining: French Dinner at 2,450 Meters

Dining at Hotel Tateyama is a highlight, especially considering its high-altitude location. Guests can choose between two restaurants: the Japanese “Tateyama” and the Western-style “Tsurugi.”

For this stay, I enjoyed a French dinner course at Restaurant Tsurugi. The menu showcases Toyama’s finest ingredients, including:

  • Firefly squid and white shrimp from Toyama Bay.
  • Nodoguro (blackthroat seaperch), a regional delicacy.
  • Premium Toyama wagyu beef as a main course.

The quality is exceptional for a mountain hotel, offering a refined culinary experience in a tranquil alpine setting.

Breakfast is served as a buffet with over 50 dishes. Highlights include freshly prepared omelets and local specialties like kombu-jime (kelp-cured fish). Dining while overlooking the majestic Tateyama landscape makes for a memorable start to the day.

Facilities and Hidden Gems

Hotel Tateyama offers a range of facilities that enhance the stay:

  • Large public bath: Not a hot spring, but filled with mineral-rich Tateyama spring water, known for leaving skin smooth. Note that it can be crowded during peak hours.
  • Bar Alpen: A hidden, reservation-only bar on the 5th floor (open until 6 PM), where guests can enjoy cocktails while learning about Tateyama’s history.
  • Drying room: Ideal for hikers and trekkers needing to dry wet gear overnight.
  • Large souvenir shop: One of the biggest on the Alpine Route, offering exclusive items like “Tateyama Hoshi no Shizuku” and local craft beer.

Exclusive Activities for Guests

Staying overnight at Hotel Tateyama unlocks unique experiences unavailable to day visitors:

  • Snow Corridor (Yuki no Otani) walks outside public hours.
  • Stargazing tours under clear alpine skies.
  • Ptarmigan (raicho) observation tours.
  • Free equipment rental, including boots, snowshoes, trekking poles, and sleds.

These activities make it easy to explore Murodo hands-free while enjoying crowd-free sightseeing.

History, Hospitality, and Future Changes

Opened in 1972, Hotel Tateyama has a classic, slightly retro atmosphere. While the building shows its age, the hospitality is outstanding, with highly trained staff consistently praised in reviews.

Importantly, the hotel will close in its current form at the end of August 2026 for major renovations led by Hoshino Resorts. This makes now the perfect time to experience the original Hotel Tateyama before its transformation.

Seasonal Highlights of Murodo

Murodo offers dramatically different scenery depending on the season:

  • Spring: Famous “Snow Walls” rising over 10 meters.
  • Summer: A lush alpine paradise with colorful flowers and crystal-clear volcanic lakes like Mikurigaike.

Each season delivers a completely different yet equally stunning experience.

Hotel Tateyama is more than just accommodation—it is the ultimate way to experience the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. With its prime location, status as Japan’s highest hotel, exceptional dining, and exclusive guest-only experiences, it stands out as a must-stay destination in Murodo.
