Delight in Chewy Fresh Pasta at “Karen” a Handmade Pasta Specialty Restaurant in Tokyo

This is our review of Karen (生パスタ専門店 カレン karen) (Maps), visited in March 2026.

This spring, I enjoyed a taste of the season in Sakurashinmachi, Tokyo, at a charming little restaurant called Karen, a fresh pasta specialty shop. Tucked away in a quiet residential neighborhood, it’s a true hidden gem boasting 100% durum wheat pasta with an irresistibly chewy texture. Known among locals as one of the best Tokyo lunch spots, “Karen” is popular with both residents and food lovers alike.

The Story Behind “Karen”

Opened in December 2018, “Karen” is a small Italian restaurant that shines like a jewel in Setagaya. The owner-chef, who spent 15 years at the renowned Oyamadai restaurant Sempre, founded Karen in pursuit of the ultimate fresh pasta.

The restaurant occupies a renovated former café, featuring only 18 seats in a cozy, welcoming space. The concept: “Use only the core of durum semolina flour to bring out its maximum aroma and elasticity.”

A Quiet Retreat in Sakurashinmachi

Just a five-minute walk from Sakurashinmachi Station, “Karen” is located behind the Hasegawa Machiko Art Museum, along the famous Sazae-san Street. The exterior has a slightly retro look, but inside you’re welcomed by soft lighting and warm décor. The mix of table and counter seating creates a relaxed atmosphere—even on weekdays. Friendly staff smiles make it all the more inviting.

Lunch offerings include weekly specials and classic pastas, with a drink bar included for around ¥1,500. I went for the spring-limited pasta: Fresh Spaghetti with Baby Scallops and Spring Cabbage in Tomato Sauce (小柱と春キャベツのトマトソース), a seasonal favorite that’s been trending on Instagram.

A Plate that Captures the Beauty of Spring

The dish was stunning the moment it arrived. A vivid red tomato sauce, topped with bright green spring cabbage and white baby scallops, created a visual masterpiece—truly “Italian art for spring.”

The tomato sauce balanced sweetness and acidity beautifully, while the fresh aroma of cabbage and delicate brininess of the scallops blended perfectly. A hint of basil added a Mediterranean breeze, making it a feast for both the eyes and nose.

The Perfect Harmony of Texture and Flavor

One bite and the refreshing acidity of the tomato sauce spreads across your palate, followed by the gentle sweetness of the scallops. The spring cabbage adds a pleasant crunch, while the chewy fresh spaghetti ties everything together. Each bite releases the nutty aroma of freshly kneaded wheat—a true showcase of what fresh pasta can be.

The set’s salad features colorful grilled vegetables with a tangy dressing that whets your appetite, and a relaxed cup of coffee from the drink bar wraps up the meal perfectly. It was a spring lunch that satisfied both body and soul.

Discovering Truly Delicious Fresh Pasta in Sakurashinmachi

Hidden Italian restaurant Karen blends seamlessly into the everyday life of Sakurashinmachi while delivering genuine flavor and craftsmanship. The spring-only pasta was delightful, but next time I’ll return to try their signature Setagaya Meat Carbo.

If you’re looking for a stylish lunch spot in Sakurashinmachi or love chewy handmade pasta, this is one restaurant you’ll definitely want to visit.
